Megaceros Hibernicus.

Megaceros Hibernicus.

Oil on Canvas. 168.5 x 183 cm, Megaceros Hibernicus was the largest deer of the species which flourished at the end of the last ice age and whose skeleton was later recovered from the bog-lands of Ireland. This semi-abstract painting of the skeleton of Megaceros Hibernicus evokes ideas of nature, place and time. Cooke was born in England, but from 1954 was resident in Ireland, which he found offered him an ideal environment for an on-going exploration of the formation, transformation and degradation of the environment.
