Tithe Applotment Book.
Tithes were a tax on agricultural produce which was payable by the occupiers of agricultural land. They were the main source of income for the parish clergy of the Church of Ireland (the largest Protestant church and the church established by law). In the 1820s, tithes were converted from payment in kind to monetary payment, necessitating a country-wide valuation of agricultural land, and leading to violent resistance. The Books give names of occupiers of land and the amount and quality of land held. This page gives details of the inhabitants of the townland of Boyoughter, Co. Donegal. A facing page, not reproduced here, tells us that some of the occupiers held there land under the "Rundale" or commonage system.
