Mr. Austin's servants
Household servants in uniform in the early twentieth century. Chambermaid Lizzie Walsh, who worked in the Metropole Hotel, Dublin, lost all of her possessions including her aprons, when the building was destroyed during Easter Week. This greatly impacted her livelihood, and her compensation claim seeking damages is also included in this exhibition.
While there is no known photograph of Lizzie Walsh, this contemporaneous photograph gives an indication of the type of clothing - vital to a household worker - that Walsh would have lost in the fire.
Photograph, glass plate negative; 17 x 22 cm.
