Exciting objects digitised at Inspiring Ireland New York collection day!

The second international Inspiring Ireland collection day took place on Sunday April 17th in New York City. Members of the public brought their 1916 memorabilia to be professionally digitised and shared family stories at the event which was hosted by Glucksman Ireland House, the centre for Irish-American studies at New York University. Conversation flowed on Twitter as well, with participants using the hashtag #InspiringIreland. On hand from the Digital Repository of Ireland were Director Dr. Natalie Harrower, Inspiring Ireland 1916 Project Creative Lead, Caroline McGee and Digital Data Curator Kevin Long

The team worked with Professor Marion Casey and visiting research scholars and postgraduate students from Glucksman Ireland House to create a unique event that helped bring many people's special stories to the world via their donated and digitised objects. In total, 7 contributors participated in the event, and Inspiring Ireland collected and digitised nearly 40 exciting objects for sharing in upcoming exhibitions, including medals, correspondence, political pamphlets, artworks and previously unseen family memorabilia belonging to Erskine Childers whose yacht was used to smuggle guns into Ireland in 1914.

The day's agenda included a welcome address by Barbara Jones, Consul General of Ireland in New York, who spoke about the importance of reaching out to Ireland’s diaspora groups during this centenary year, and presentations by Dr Natalie Harrower and Caroline McGee on the hidden stories of the Easter Rising that are being revealed through public and private objects in Inspiring Ireland.
