Diary of Father Aloysius

This diary was purchased at auction by the donor. It is signed by William Patrick Travers himself, though the main text is likely transcribed from his original account published by the Capuchins.

Father Aloysius (born William Patrick Travers) was the Capuchin priest who administered the last rights to James Connolly. This diary covers the events of Easter Week 1916, staring on Easter Monday and with the final entry on May 12th.

It describes his involvement, including visiting the rebel leaderswith other members of the order at the different locations in order to facilitate the surrender of the rebels. Entries describe how he gave holy communion to Patrick Pearse and Thomas McDonagh, and how he administered the last rites to James Connolly before accompanying him to his execution.

He also details visiting Patrick Pearse's mother on Wednesday May 3rd, telling her that he was still hopeful her son would be spared, but that she was resigned to her son's fate.
